Mandatory Training:
- Avalanche Training All members must complete an American Avalanche Association's level 1 course curriculum as well as our own in-house training.
- Technical Snow Training This is usually held in Spring time around May, depending on local snow conditions. This involves 1/2 to 3/4 of a day, early morning start, and is held on a Saturday or Sunday. Ice axe, crampons, sled lowering and snow anchors are discussed.
- Scree evacuation (Low Angle Rope Rescue) This is again approximately 1/2 to 3/4 of a day long. This is to learn and practice the techniques of a litter evacuation over rough terrain. It is usually held in conjunction with our Hi Angle training. Usually held on Saturday or Sunday. Often there is a classroom component before the field day.
- Hi Angle evacuation This is a good 1/2 to 3/4 of a day in a vertical environment. We try to hold it in conjunction with our Scree evacuation. It is usually held in the first two weeks of June, on a Saturday or Sunday. Often there is a classroom component before the field day.
- Whitewater/swift water rescue. This is usually held on either a Saturday or Sunday, usually in May or June, depending on water conditions. Some years it is held in early July due to water temperature. Expect to spend a minimum of a half-day. Since MRA is not the primary response team for swift water rescue, our trainings are much more limited than Swiftwater Tech trainings.
- Pack Check. This is held each spring and fall to make sure you have your gear together for the upcoming season.
- Rescue Class. From time to time, MRA will sponsor a rescue class. This class will cover all aspects of our team. It usually lasts 6 weeks, with 2 nights per week, and at least 4 full field days.
