Essentials pack list

 All the items listed below are required to be in a Mountain Rescue-Aspen's member's pack at all times. Conditions permitting, some gear may not be necessary. For your personal benefit, it is highly recommended that all gear be marked for easy identification/return.

1. Helmet with goggles and ear plugs (for helicopter use)
2. Personal pager
3. Work gloves Leather (for rope handling)

    4. Water minimum 1 quart, with water purification device
    5. Watch/time piece (for medical care)
    6. Food and snacks for 2 days
    7. Headlamp with spare batteries and bulb
    8. Sunglasses and sunscreen
    9. Hiking boots sturdy leather and two sets of socks
    10. Climbing harness and assorted climbing gear
    • Two locking carabiners
    • Four non-locking carabiners
    • rappel device
    • 1 daisy chain
    • Two 8' pieces of 1" tubular webbing
    • Two prusiks of 5-6 mm perlon (4' long and 7' long before tying)
    11. Appropriate seasonal clothing in addition to the following: Material: Wool or synthetic that will remain warm when wet
    • Yellow mountain rescue nomex shirt
    • Pile jacket and/or vest
    • Long underwear top and bottoms
    • Rain jacket and pants (waterproof and windproof)
    • Neck gaiter
    • Leg gaiters
    • Warm hat
    • Baseball cap
    • Warm gloves (2 pairs)
    • Down or synthetic jacket
    12. Survival/overnight Kit
    • fire starter or stove
    • small pot to cook in or heat water
    • Bivy Gear (bag or 2 heavy duty trash bags)
    • Repair kit
    • EXTRA FOOD
    • Maps
    • Survey tape
    • Hand warmers
    • Sit pad
    • Space blanket
    • Pocket knife or leather man


    Winter pack additions
    All items listed below are recommended to be readily available to a mountain rescue member for a WINTER rescue. Conditions permitting, some gear may not be necessary. Please mark all your gear for easy identification and return.
    • Personal avalanche beacon (457 Meg HZ-European high frequency)
    • Backcountry skis, skins and boots: either alpine touring or metal edged telemark skis
    • OR Snowshoes
    • Ski poles (avalanche probe)
    • Shovel
    • Repair kit appropriate to the gear you are using (spare binding, screw driver, screws)
    • Small thermos with tea bag and hot water


    Summer pack additions
    All items listed below are recommended to be readily available to a mountain rescue member for a SUMMER rescue. Conditions permitting, some gear may not be necessary. Please mark all your gear for easy identification and return.
    • Water filtration ability (filter or pills)
    • Crampons, ice axe


    Optional Equipment (Based on Personal Discretion)
    • Sleeping bag and pad OR Down or synthetic jacket
    • Tent OR tarp OR bivy sack
    • Wet suit and neoprene boots, OR sneakers OR Teva sandals
    • Appropriate water rescue gear (throw bag, PFD, kayak, etc)


    First Aid Kit
    See current list, but don't forget heavy duty rubber gloves and pocket mask.
